Who is Paula?
A strong and unbroken oral tradition tells the story of Paula Jaraquemada, a member of the family that owned Hacienda Santa Rita in 1818. After the Patriot Army of Chile lost the Battle of Cancha Rayada, she sheltered 120 of its soldiers in her cellar.
She not only gave them refuge but also provided ammunition, horses, food, and care for the wounded—playing a vital role in revitalising the fight for independence.
